At the Great Plains Health Callahan Cancer Center, you’ll find comprehensive treatments for nearly all types of cancer, along with state-of-the-art equipment and oncology care that puts you first.
Our cancer specialists include medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, specially trained oncology nurses, highly skilled surgeons and other specialists who have been treating cancer for many years. We follow national cancer treatment guidelines and continuously update our skills to include new advances, such as using genetic testing to guide treatments.
In addition to our special certifications and training, every member of our warm and caring staff shares a passion for cancer care and our community. We treat you as a person, not as a cancer diagnosis, and want you to feel like part of our family.
Our approach to cancer treatment
Here are a few of the many things about the way we treat cancer that set us apart.
- We personalize your care. No two people experience cancer the same way. That’s why we individualize your treatment plan based on your cancer and other factors, including your personal situation and needs. For example, we try hard to fit your treatments into your daily schedule.
- We work together to treat cancer. Our team approach to treatment allows you to benefit from the collective wisdom of different specialists who may collaborate on your care. Our experts often hold tumor boards to review complex cases and recommend treatments.
- We empower you with knowledge. We will help you understand your cancer treatment steps and how to prepare for any procedures.
- We surround you with support. We offer all the physical, mental and social support you need before, during and after treatment.
Our comprehensive cancer treatments
Depending on your needs, our team may recommend one or more of the following treatments:
Chemotherapy. Our medical oncologists may prescribe chemotherapy drugs. The Callahan Cancer Center is home to the largest infusion center in the region. The center includes 12 infusion rooms with heated, reclining chairs and TVs, as well as bedrooms, should you choose to lie down for chemotherapy. Other comforts and amenities include blankets, beverages and snacks, as well as the ability to order meals from our cafeteria.
Radiation therapy. Our state-of-the-art linear accelerator allows us to use advanced techniques—like image-guided radiation therapy and 3D modeling. With these techniques, we aim powerful radiation precisely at the cancer while avoiding healthy tissue and reducing the risk of side effects.
Cancer surgery. General surgeons at Great Plains perform many cancer surgeries, including colon and breast surgeries. If your case is complex, we can also call in specialists in urology, gynecology, orthopedics, and head and neck cancers. These experts can consult on your case and provide additional surgical procedures.
In addition, we partner with Nebraska Medicine of Omaha for easy access to highly complex surgery for cancers of the chest, liver, pancreas and biliary system. You can meet a Nebraska Medicine specialist at the Callahan Cancer Center for presurgery consultations and for follow-up visits after your surgery.
Clinical trials. Great Plains Health participates in clinical trials and national research protocols, giving you access to promising new treatments. In fact, you’ll have access to many of the same treatments and cancer drugs as patients in large metropolitan areas.
