March is National Social Work Month, a time to reflect on the role that social workers play throughout the community of North Platte.

"Social workers contribute at all levels of society, working with individuals, families, schools, universities, non-profit agencies, corporations, hospitals and government offices to mediate conflict, foster positive relationships and create hope and opportunity for people in need," said Mel McNea, CEO at Great Plains Health.

At Great Plains Health, social workers provide patient assistance in many different departments including observation, emergency department, cancer center, behavioral health, home health, hospice and outpatient services.

"We are fortunate to have a team of dedicated social workers who work extremely hard. This team includes social worker and case management manager, Nan Hynes, our 2016 Caring Kind award winner," said McNea. This is award is bestowed each year upon the best and brightest hospital employees from across the state by the Nebraska Hospital Association.

The hospital employs a group of 13 of social workers as part of their multi-specialty, comprehensive healthcare team to ensure that patients have access to the resources they need to get well and back home again.

"I really enjoy being a social worker. I have a career that is and has been an extension of who I am, my values and my beliefs," say Hynes. "The best part of my job is being able to support people and connecting them to the right resources that can continue to aid them."
