In the heart of Nebraska, where two hospitals stood as separate pillars of care, visionary healthcare leaders and community members gathered with a dream. They saw beyond the present moment to envision a single, unified, independent medical center that would serve not just North Platte, but a growing regional community.
The community rallied behind their vision with generosity. Through a grassroots campaign that united neighbors and strangers alike, they surpassed the $1.2 million fundraising goal to create a foundation for independent healthcare that would serve generations.
On August 9, 1975, their vision became reality as Great Plains Medical Center, which would evolve through the years to become Great Plains Regional Medical Center and later Great Plains Health, opened its doors, launching a journey of growth and innovation that continues today.
Locations
Two storied institutions-Memorial Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital-merged into one facility. Great Plains Medical Center opened its doors, a testament to community spirit and medical vision.
In recognition of our expanding impact across Nebraska, we proudly added "Regional" to our hospital's name-a fitting change as we served patients from 43 counties throughout the state. This period of growth brought specialized healthcare closer to home for many Nebraskans through eight new service lines. Among these additions were radiation therapy facilities, comprehensive cardiopulmonary services, and advanced cardiac diagnostic capabilities.
Major developments included the opening of our Heart Institute, construction of a $100 million patient tower, and expansion of our Wound Healing Center—all extending our commitment to comprehensive care.
